These Red Sex Link chickens are outstanding as dual-purpose egg-and-meat birds. The hens lay 200 to 280 large brown eggs per year and grow to weigh 6 to 7 pounds. The roosters weigh a hefty 8 to 9 pounds.
At the time of hatch, the gender of the chicks may be determined by the color of their down. The little males are shades of yellow, while the females are darker shades of red. At maturity the roosters are mostly white, while the hens have mostly red plumage.
Our Red Sex Link chickens are the result of mating two different heritage breeds, Rhode Island Red roosters and Delaware hens. They are called sex links because this cross takes advantage of genes carried on the parents’ sex chromosomes to yield chicks that may be sexed by obvious differences in their down color. Interestingly, the roosters look more like Delawares, while the hens look more like Rhode Island Reds.
Crossing a Delaware rooster with a Rhode Island Red hen will not have the same result. Instead, all the chicks will exhibit the Delaware feather pattern — mostly white, with black-striped tail and neck feathers. Other sex link chickens offered here at Chickens for Backyards include Black Star and Golden Comet.
