The stunning Golden Duckwing Phoenix Standard rooster has a black breast and tail with a flashy golden neck and saddle. The hen is shades of brown flecked with pale gold, set off by a rich salmon colored breast.
Another noteworthy aspect of the Phoenix breed is the roosters’ unusually long sickle, saddle, and tail feathers. The tail can grow as long as 5 feet. To encourage long feather growth, feed this breed a 20% protein game bird ration. Since feathers fall out and regrow during a molt, discourage molting by using electric lights to maintain 15 hours of total daylight year around. High perches help keep the tail feathers from breaking or soiling.
The Golden Duckwing Phoenix Standard is popular among long-tail breed enthusiasts, and a well-kept rooster attracts attention in the show room. The Golden Phoenix was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1983.
