French Cuckoo Marans come from the French port town of Marans. The French Marans have sparsely feathered legs, as distinct from English Marans, which have clean legs.
The cuckoo color pattern is similar to that of the well-known barred Plymouth Rock, except that barred feathers have straight bars of roughly the same width, alternating black and white. By contrast, in the French Cuckoo Marans pattern the bars are more V-shape than straight, and the dark bars are more gray than black.
The result is that instead of being distinctly barred, Marans appear more mottled. This mottled plumage pattern somewhat provides camouflage that makes these chickens excellent for free ranging.
The Marans is a dual-purpose breed. The large size provides plenty of meat, and the hens are good layers of eggs with dark brown shells that bring a premium price at market.
