The Blue Polish chicken has a knob on top of its head, from which a crest of white feathers sprout. These feathers create a puffy pompom on the heads of hens and a sort of floppy umbrella shape on the heads of roosters.
The Polish chicken’s topknot feathers often require a bit of extra maintenance. At outsize crest can limit vision, making it easy to startle a bird with sudden movements. It also makes the bird more susceptible to predators it may not see coming. And the crest feathers easily get wet, which may be from inclement weather or simply from dipping into the drinking water. Large crests may therefore need trimming.
With this bit of extra care, the Polish breed is excellent as a backyard ornamental. Polish chickens are also tremendously popular at exhibitions. The Non Bearded White Crested Blue Polish was accepted into the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1963.
As with blue varieties of other breeds, mating two Blue Polish chickens won’t necessarily produce blue chicks. Some chicks will be blue. Others with be splash or black-blue.
The Blue Polish is one of several Polish varieties offered here at Chickens for Backyards. Properly cared for, they are extremely mild mannered and make outstanding pets.
