The Ayam Cemani originates from the island of Java, Indonesia, where for centuries the breed was involved in religious and mystical ceremonies. It was introduced to Europe in 1998, and to the United States in 2014. Efforts are now underway to have the breed standardized by the American Poultry Association.

The name Ayam Cemani means black chicken. Everything about this breed, from beak to bones, is black except the blood, which is of normal color.

The blackness results from the genetic condition fibromelanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation. However, about 30% of the chicks may show a bit of pink or tan on the beak, tongue, and toes. And some Ayam Cemani roosters may develop mulberry coloring at maturity.

Ayam Cemani hens lay 80 to 120 cream-color eggs per year. Although they rarely brood, when they do they are excellent mothers.

This hardy, low-maintenance breed is an active forager that is constantly vigilant against predators. It is a friendly, even tempered bird that gets along well with people of all ages. The gorgeous ornamental Ayam Cemani makes a truly unique addition to any backyard flock.
