The Egyptian Fayoumis chicken breed is an extremely old breed that originated in Egypt. This breed was brought to the U.S. in the 1940s to be studied at Iowa State University. Research has proven this breed to be very well suited to hot climates and possess strong foraging survival instincts and make it a great choice for a free-range chicken breed. Hens will usually lay eggs at 4 months and have a strong tendency to go broody, while cockerels (young rooster) will crow at a remarkedly early age of 5-6 weeks old.
