The Columbian Wyandotte chicken was developed in the United States by crossing a white Wyandotte with a barred Plymouth Rock. The striking result is a white chicken with black hackle feathers laced with white, black tail feathers and, on the rooster, laced black saddle feathers.

This variety gets its name from its first appearance at an exhibition in 1893 — the World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair. The event commemorated Christopher Columbus’ 1492 landing in the New World.

The American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection admitted the Columbian variety in 1905. Wyandottes have a rose comb, clean legs, and yellow skin.

Wyandottes are a calm breed. The hens lay medium-size eggs in various shades of brown. They may brood, and make excellent mothers.

As a dual-purpose egg-and-meat breed, Wyandotte chickens mature to a hefty 8½ pounds for roosters, 6½ pounds for hens. Where available space requires a smaller breed, you might consider our Columbian Wyandotte bantams.
