The Wyandotte breed was created in Wisconsin in 1880. It is an American breed named after a North American Indian tribe that resided from the Great Lakes to Ohio and Kansas. The Wyandotte chicken breed was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1888.

The Red Laced Wyandotte is named for the truly distinctive plumage. Like other Wyandotte chickens, this breed exhibits a black fringe on the feathers that gives it a “laced” appearance. With feathers loosely-packed, creating a fluffy appearance, and a small comb, the Red Laced Wyandotte is a big, beautiful chicken.

Reaching a full size of about 6 to 8.5 pounds this breed weathers cold temperatures well and is not susceptible to frostbite. Like any true diva, Red Laced Wyandotte likes to have room to strut and the freedom to crow and cluck, so they are best suited to free-range flocks and rural areas. They are decent egg-layers and are good meat chickens. Some are broody hens, so they can be good for breeding.

This breed is proud and stately with strong personalities, and they generally get along well with other chickens and their owners. Though they are calm and even-tempered, the Red Laced Wyandotte is not overly affectionate.
