Black Ameraucana chickens for sale are a beautiful choice for backyard flock owners who want a pure breed with calm personality, cold hardiness, and true blue egg color. Developed in the United States in the 1970s, Ameraucana chickens come from Araucana ancestry but are a separate American breed with their own unique traits.

Ameraucana chickens should not be confused with Easter Eggers or Araucanas. Ameraucanas are a pure breed, while Easter Eggers are mixed-breed colored egg layers. Araucanas are known for being rumpless and having ear tufts, while Ameraucanas have both beards and muffs. Black Ameraucanas also have slate to black legs, pea combs, and a quiet, calm temperament that makes them a great addition to backyard flocks.

One of the most desirable traits of Black Ameraucana chickens is their ability to lay blue-tinted eggs. They are bred to retain the blue egg gene, making them a wonderful choice for chicken keepers who want colorful eggs in their backyard egg basket.

Black Ameraucanas are also a good choice for colder climates because their pea combs are less prone to cold-weather issues than larger comb types. Mature roosters average about 6 1/2 pounds, while hens average about 5 1/2 pounds.

Young Black Ameraucana chicks may show some white feathers during their first and second stage feathering. This is normal, and by about 6 months of age, they should develop solid black adult plumage.

If you are looking for blue egg laying chickens for sale, Black Ameraucanas are a wonderful way to add beauty, calm temperament, cold hardiness, and colorful egg production to your backyard flock.
