Mottled Houdan chickens for sale are a beautiful choice for backyard flock owners who want a rare ornamental breed with gentle personality, unique features, and useful egg-laying ability. Originating in France, this historic breed gets its name from the city of Houdan, near Paris.

Mottled Houdan chickens are known for their fluffy crests, beards, V-shaped combs, mottled black-and-white plumage, and five toes. Their crested appearance is similar to Polish and Crevecoeur chickens, while the five-toed trait may come from Dorking chickens or other French breeds used in the breed’s development. The Houdan was first exported to North America in 1865 and was admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874.

These chickens are exceptionally docile, gentle, and tolerant of confinement, making them a good choice for backyard chicken keepers who want friendly birds with ornamental appeal. Mottled Houdan hens are also fairly good layers of medium-sized white eggs. Some keepers raise them for both eggs and meat, but they are most often valued for ornamental and exhibition purposes.

If you are looking for rare chickens for sale, Mottled Houdan chickens are a charming way to add beauty, history, personality, and productivity to your backyard flock.
