French Black Maran chicks are a beautiful choice for backyard flock owners who want a friendly dual-purpose breed with rich black plumage, light feathering on the legs, and famously dark brown eggs. This variety comes from the French port town of Marans and is loved by chicken keepers who want both practical value and eye-catching flock appeal.

French Black Marans were recognized by the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 2020. These chickens are known for their lustrous black feathers, although young birds may show a few white feathers during their first and second stage molt. By about six months of age, they typically develop solid black adult plumage.

Marans chickens are friendly, useful, and well suited for backyard flocks, homesteads, and small farms. They are considered a dual-purpose breed, offering both egg production and good body size. Even Marans roosters are often known for getting along well with one another when given proper space, housing, and care.

The biggest reason many chicken keepers choose French Black Marans is their egg color. Hens lay incredibly dark chocolate brown eggs that add beautiful variety to any backyard egg basket. Like all brown egg layers, shell color may become lighter during a laying cycle, then darken again at the beginning of the next cycle.

If you are looking for dark brown egg laying chickens for sale, French Black Marans are a wonderful way to add beauty, friendliness, productivity, and rich egg color to your backyard flock.

French Marans in other color varieties are also offered here at Chickens for Backyards. We are sure you will love this breed from the French port town of Marans.
