The bearded Buff Laced Polish chicken comes to us from Holland. It was brought to North America in the early 1800s and admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1883.
The Buff Laced Polish has golden buff feathers laced in creamy white. The beak, shanks, and feet are slate gray.
The name Polish derives from the pole, or knob, on top of the chicken's head, which creates a topknot of feathers. But a large crest of feathers can inhibit vision, making these birds easy to startle. Limited vision can also make them more susceptible to flying predators and to bullying by the more aggressive chicken breeds. However, resolving these issues is easy by carefully trimming head feathers away from the eyes.
These chickens can chill if their topknot gets wet in cold weather. They therefore do better in a warm, dry climate as long as they have plenty of shady resting places.
Bearded Buff Laced Polish chickens are docile and friendly, making them excellent as pets. This ornamental breed is a show-stopper at exhibition, as well as a great conversation starter in any backyard flock.
