Marans vs Welsummers: Choosing a Dark Brown Egg Layer
If dark brown eggs are high on your backyard flock wish list, Marans and Welsummers are two breeds worth considering. Both are known for laying beautiful brown eggs, but they differ in appearance, egg color, temperament, size, and the kind of backyard setup they fit best.
Choosing between them really comes down to what matters most to you. If you want some of the deepest chocolate-brown eggs possible, a Marans variety may have the edge. If you want a hardy, active bird known for reddish-brown and sometimes speckled eggs, a Welsummer can be an excellent choice.
Marans Are Famous for Rich Chocolate-Brown Eggs
Marans originated in France and have become especially popular among backyard chicken keepers because of their dark eggs. Several Marans varieties exist, including Cuckoo Marans, French Black Copper Marans, French Cuckoo Marans, and French Wheaten Marans.
Egg color varies by bird and variety, but Marans are known for producing some of the richest brown shades found in a backyard flock. French Black Copper Marans, for example, can lay large, dark chocolate-brown eggs. Their shell color may gradually lighten as a laying cycle continues, then darken again when a new cycle begins.
That natural variation is one reason a basket of different-colored chicken eggs can look different from week to week, even when the eggs come from the same hens.
Welsummers Produce Distinctive Reddish-Brown Eggs
Welsummers originated in the Netherlands and are another favorite among flock owners who want darker brown eggs. Their large eggs are generally deep reddish-brown or terracotta colored, and some may have darker brown speckles.
Those speckles can make Welsummer eggs especially recognizable in a mixed basket. While they may not always reach the deep chocolate shades associated with certain Marans varieties, they still provide much more visual interest than the standard light brown egg.
Since eggshell color is determined largely by genetics, choosing the right breed is one of the easiest ways to intentionally build the kind of egg basket you want.
Their Appearance Is Very Different
Egg color may be the first reason you compare these breeds, but the chickens themselves look quite different too.
Cuckoo Marans have a barred or mottled gray-and-white appearance, while French Black Copper Marans are known for dark black plumage accented by rich copper coloring around the neck. French Marans varieties also typically have some feathering on their legs.
Welsummers have warm brown and reddish coloring with darker markings. Hens have a classic, natural-looking pattern, while roosters tend to show brighter red, orange, green, and black coloring.
If your backyard flock's overall appearance matters, both breeds can add plenty of visual interest beyond the eggs they produce.
Both Offer More Than Egg Color
Neither breed is useful only for its eggs. Marans are generally sturdy, dual-purpose chickens. Cuckoo Marans hens can reach around 7 pounds, while roosters may reach around 8 pounds. They are also active birds that often enjoy foraging when given room to explore.
Welsummers are active foragers too. They are intelligent, hardy birds and work well for flock owners who want chickens that enjoy exploring the yard rather than staying close to the coop all day.
Both can work in a mixed backyard flock when birds have enough space, food, water, and appropriate introductions.
Climate Can Help You Choose Between the Two
Climate can also influence your decision. Welsummers are known for being cold hardy and can continue laying during cooler weather. Their ability to handle colder conditions makes them especially attractive for backyard owners who experience long winters.
Marans can also adapt well to a variety of backyard environments, depending on the specific variety. No matter which breed you choose, it is always smart to consider which chickens fit your climate and available space before adding new birds.
Which Dark Brown Egg Layer Is Right for You?
Both breeds are excellent choices, but they appeal to slightly different flock goals.
Marans may be the better fit if you:
- Want especially deep chocolate-brown eggs
- Like having several breed varieties to choose from
- Want a larger dual-purpose chicken
- Enjoy distinctive plumage and breed history
Welsummers may be the better fit if you:
- Want reddish-brown or speckled eggs
- Prefer an active bird that enjoys foraging
- Need a breed that handles colder conditions well
- Want a hardy, versatile backyard chicken
There is no wrong choice if your main goal is adding darker eggs to the nesting box. You could even keep both breeds and enjoy the subtle differences in color each one brings to your basket.
And while dark shells may look especially impressive, remember that brown eggs are not automatically healthier than lighter eggs. Egg color is primarily a breed characteristic, so choosing Marans or Welsummers is really about the flock traits and egg colors you enjoy most.
