We are selling the Speckled Sussex because it is a useful dual-purpose bird. They are a medium-sized heavy breed. Sussex chickens have a deep broad body which makes it excellent for fattening. Their white skin makes them easy to dress.

This variety is called speckled because of the white spangles on the ends of its otherwise dark mahogany-colored feathers. Their color also makes them a great predator resistant bird. The Speckled Sussex has a very beautiful plumage that becomes more speckled every year after their molt.

The Speckled Sussex is a very curious bird and they love to forage. Because of their large size, they do not fly and are easily confined. The Sussex is a very hardy bird and a good brown egg layer. This breed is also known for its egg production in the colder months. Along with being a good dual-purpose bird, they make excellent pet chickens. The Speckled Sussex is a very gentle chicken that is easily tamed making this breed an all-around great backyard chicken.

You are producing and selling some superior birds and the buying public should know about this. My Speckled sussex I bought from you folks 2yrs. ago are the friendliest chickens I have EVER owned and quite beautiful!. I have read that they are considered a non flyer but have seen them, easily, fly over a 6ft. fence and will roost in the trees at night if allowed. Will keep in touch, love the chicks! Bill

    My favorite
I have to say that if I were starting my flock over today, I think I would have an entire flock of these speckled Sussex. These hens are such gentle and inquisitive little birds. My little Bessie is always the first to come running to me. I’m so glad to have found this sweet breed. Chickens for Backyards was great all around. From ordering to shipping. I could not have asked for a better experience. I will certainly order from chickens for backyards again in the future.

Perfect for the first time chicken raiser!
I ordered my first chickens ever last year from Chickens for Backyards. I was looking for Speckled Sussex based on what I had read about them, needed hens only, and the smallest number possible. Our three Speckled Sussex arrived the day after their hatch, peeping and in good condition. I can honestly say that picking them up at the post office is one of the best memories I have! Fast forward…they celebrate their first “hatch day” on September 10th. They are friendly, beautiful, and lay nice medium size brown eggs. The ladies are a wonderful addition to our Arizona backyard!

    Conversation starter
This bird is one of a handful of breeds I now own that was purchased from Chickens for backyards. This one is always a conversation starter. I am surprised this breed isn’t more widespread as it is the most mild mannered out of all our breeds I own and is right now are most consistent layer. I don’t think you can go wrong with a speckled Sussex and I believe chickensforbackyards.com has the nicest ones I have seen. Thank you for the quality hen!

    Thanks
    Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that our girls are doing great. With 7 chickens we are getting 5 or 6 eggs on alternating days. Sometimes 7 a day! Mademoiselle CuCoo Marans lays the biggest eggs I have ever seen and they are almost always double yolks.
I am a very satisfied customer. If and when I need more birds I will be getting them from y’all.
    Cheers

And you were absolutely correct on the fire ants. They don’t stand a chance. In fact the girls have almost eradicated them completely from our yard. Something I have not been able to do in the last 10-15 years….
