The Blue Swedish duck was developed in 1835 in an area called Pomerania which currently comprises the coastal regions of NE Germany and NW Poland. These ducks were first introduced to North America in 1884. The Blue Swedish ducks were admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1904.

Blue birds do not breed true. In other words, if you mate a Blue Swedish with another Blue Swedish, only 50% will hatch blue. You will also get 25% black with white chests (called Black Swedish) and 25% that is a very light grey color, often called Silver or Splashed White Swedish. Blue Swedish is similar in size to the Rouen and is a very hardy duck. They mature very slowly and do not do well in confinement. This is a good thing because their color is difficult for predators to see. They also have a calm, social temperament which makes a great pet.

The Blue Swedish duck loves to forage in orchards and paddocks which make them an excellent addition to the farmer. They can produce white, green, and blue-tinted eggs. They also have well-flavored meat for the person who would like to consume them. They are an all-around great duck for any home.

I wish I could leave a better review on these Blue Swedish ducklings. No fault of the hatchery the little ducklings were held by the Postal Service for too many days. Customer Service went out of their way to make a bad situation better. Unfortunately when I called they no longer had this breed of ducklings on their hatch schedule. I have three females from another hatchery and they are gorgeous birds.
