Barred Plymouth Rock chickens, which are also sometimes called Plymouth Rocks or Barred Rocks, are believed to be one of the United States’ oldest chicken breeds. Their heritage isn’t 100 percent clear, as there have been varying reports of crosses, but in any case, Barred Plymouth Rock chickens have long been one of the most popular chicken breeds in the country. Their name was inspired by their beautiful, striped black and white feathers, and they have become favorites on farms and in small backyards due to their calm temperament and egg-laying capabilities.

The first thing you will notice about Barred Plymouth Rock chickens is that they are incredibly easy to manage. They also have very docile personalities and are usually affectionate to those who care for them. The Barred Plymouth Rock chicks you purchase will quickly prove to be good with kids and other chicken breeds, making them an ideal choice for small backyard setups with other chickens. When you have Barred Plymouth Rock chickens to roam, they will actively forage and eat worms, lizards, ants, and other pests that some chicken breeds usually shy away from. Additionally, as Barred Plymouth Rock chickens can withstand cold temperatures and just about any climate, you won’t have to worry about taking extra precautions to protect them from the elements.

In addition to wowing you with their personalities, Barred Plymouth Rock chickens can also provide you with plenty of eggs and meat. They are dual-purpose chickens that can lay up to 280 large brown eggs per year and grow to be about 6 (hens) to 7.5 (roosters) pounds on average, providing your family with a decent amount of meat. Whether you opt to use Barred Plymouth Rock chickens for their eggs and meat or you decide to simply keep them as a pet in your backyard, you will quickly see why they have remained so popular as the years have gone by.

    Healthy & Happy
One of the 4 chicks we received a couple of months ago, Trixie our Barred Rock is the friendliest of the flock. They all arrived healthy and have thrived! It is great that I was able buy just one chick from the breeds I wanted. Very happy with my chicks!

  2. Holly Childs

    happy kids!
We ordered a few different breeds… our Barred Plymouths are healthy, sweet and spunky! My kids all wanted a different breed and the company sent exactly what we hoped for and can all grow up together! They are getting along well. 🙂

    Love our birds!
We ordered 3 different breeds – 2 barred plymouth rocks, 2 buff orpintons and 2 easter eggers. They all arrived warm and safe in their shipping box exactly when we were told they would arrive. They are 5mos old now, no eggs yet hopefully soon. They are friendly birds and are wonderful with my 3 year old son. Great addition to our family!

    Beautiful Hens
Chickens for backyards provided me with a lovely little barred rock last February. She arrived with 4 other chicks that ordered in a double boxed and very sturdy container. All the chicks were healthy, warm and chirping happily. The barred rocks are a beautiful and friendly chicken. They love to see what you’re doing. I think mine thinks I come to keep her company whenever I’m working in the chicken coop:)

    Pretty Chickens!
Our barred rocks are some of the prettiest chickens we’ve had! They have a gentle personality and lay lovely brown eggs. They arrived in good health, cheeping loudly. We’ve always had good healthy chickens from chickensforbackyards. We tried purchasing chickens from the local feed store once and realized that it’s worth paying for the shipping!

  6. David Leonard

    Love our barred rock
Ordered 4 chicks in the spring from Chickens for Backyards, including a barred rock which is our favorite. She (Barb) is the leader of the bunch and is very curious and friendly. She’s also a great egg layer, currently laying 5-7 large eggs a week. She’s very healthy and a beautiful bird. We went to the local ag fair and Barb was way better looking than the barred rock that won the poultry competition there.

    Pretty Hens
We have received 2 orders from Chickens for Backyards in the past 6 months- both shipments were great! Everyone survived, hopped out of the box, and starting eating/drinking. Amazing. Our first set of girls are beautiful! Big healthy thriving hens. We ended up with a Roo and CFB were wonderful to work with and reimbursed us. He was gorgeous! But loud and had to move to a farm. 2nd set are still young, but they are thriving and growing. We don’t have a favorite big hen as they are all so different but all sweet and super friendly – Barred Plymouth, Buff Orpington and Americauna. They’ve been laying for a few months now. New chicks – Production Red, Laced Wyndotte, Americauna, and Light Brahma. My only disappointment is that our first Americauna is not laying blue/green eggs. They are large light eggs Maybe the second one will lay different colors?? I think you get much better quality hens than you would from the local tractor supply. These are good looking girls!

    Gorgeous pullet!
We ordered 5 mixed chicks and received 7, two of which were barred rocks. They quickly became a favorite and are a true pet bird. We did loose one due to unknown causes (she was found dead in the coop) but assumed something was wrong with her genetically. She always acted much different than the others. Anyway, our remaining pullet is GORGEOUS and as healthy as can be. She is sweet with our children and loves to be held and eat treats. We would absolutely order again.

    Perfect New England Backyard Birds
First time owner but these sweethearts are healthy and thriving…and already laying enough eggs eggs to supply our family plus give some to our neighbors. Brooded on our porch, in their new coop by July. Endured summer heat well and they’re adjusting to a cool fall in Maine well. I feel we made geat choices in both breed and in sourcing them through chickensforbackyards.com
Easy ordering and good communication. Scheduling and delivery were perfect. Thank you CFB for my wonderful “chick-a-doodles!”

    HAPPIEST LADY EVER!!!
I just received my assortment of chicks in the mail, they are healthy and happy and I’m already in love with them. Chickensforbackyards shipped them superbly. I knew they had been in good hands when I saw the packaging and the carefulness they had been shipped w/ heating pack and all. I’m so happy, a little easter present for our family. 🙂

I wanted to leave a review for Chickens for Backyards, after my experience with them. I had the most wonderful experience with CFB that I could hope for. Not only did they answer all my questions via the phone, they were wonderful with helping me resolve a problem. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to start a back yard flock. You have a great assortment to choose from and informed staff. I will be using Chickens for Backyards again in a few years when my girls retire.

    Thanks
    Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that our girls are doing great. With 7 chickens we are getting 5 or 6 eggs on alternating days. Sometimes 7 a day! Mademoiselle CuCoo Marans lays the biggest eggs I have ever seen and they are almost always double yolks.
I am a very satisfied customer. If and when I need more birds I will be getting them from y’all.
    Cheers

And you were absolutely correct on the fire ants. They don’t stand a chance. In fact the girls have almost eradicated them completely from our yard. Something I have not been able to do in the last 10-15 years….

  14. Tammie Buchanan

    Great buy
We purchased our chicks last spring. They all came very well packed and in excellent condition. Our chickens started laying at about 4 1/2 – 5 months old and have layed eggs all winter. Healthy, beautiful chickens.

  15. Susanna Northrup

    Great chickens
I ordered 15 chickens of mixed breeds last May, and all of them are still alive and thriving. The Barred Plymouth Rocks are my favorites. I refer to them as the “smart ones”. My favorite one, Nora, was always who I chose whenever I needed to show the chickens something new and needed a leader. She also likes being picked up and carried around, and does not appear to have a mean bone in her body. She was also the first to start laying.
Customer service was great when I noticed that I was missing a Light Brahma from my order. All the chickens arrived safe and healthy, and have stayed that way.

  16. Edie Hines

    Good Looking Bird
Great chicken! Very sweet and pretty.

  17. Joel Blackburn

    Hagrid
One of our chickens is the Barred Plymouth, her name is Hagrid. She is very adventurous and curious. She often likes to venture out on her own and get into mischief, but she knows where her home is and returns every night.

They are fun to watch as they search for bugs and things to eat. They get along well with dogs and cats, usually by avoiding them. They don’t mind being picked up and carried around; they get along well with children. They especially like eating pecans. We got chickens because we thought they would be an interesting pet, but they do so much more than just laying eggs.

  18. Danielle Koch

    Awesome!
These were by far our favorite breed! Always were so great with your little kids! Came in the mail so fast and healthy! They grew to be great egg layers and really nice looking chickens! We will be ordering for here again!

    My Unexpected Favorites
This was my first time buying from chickensforbackyards.com and was uneasy due to the lack of information I found prior. They not only had the fastest ship dates available but the customer service was excellent and we received them faster than we expected and even got two extra! We ordered a mix of 10 Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, and Barred Rocks. We ended up getting an extra barred and an extra Easter Egger! The Barred Rocks who I quickly named the trouble makers have ended up being my absolute favorites. They are so friendly and courageous. All chicks arrived healthy and thriving. Couldn’t be happier.

  20. Thomas Strickland

    Awesome chicks!
We are very happy with our chicks! They arrived very well packed (We were worried about getting them in the mail) and were all thriving and lively. All of them chugged water immediately and took to our two leghorn chicks right away. Thank you we’ll be ordering from you again!

  21. iderby

All are chickens are healthy and we got extra and they’re all funny and healthy but the Plymouth rock chickens are sassy . I can see her ordering your chickens after this website because they come really healthy and they give you extra chickens if one of your beats you don’t make it and they all come healthy

  22. Luis Rivera

Ordered my chickens in late December and they arrived in early February. I received an extra one and all are doing well, and are very healthy.

  23. Jeremiah Meachum

Ordered my chicks beginning of March, they shipped on the day they were supposed to and I received them the next day, all very healthy & spunky. I ordered 6 & they sent me 7 . The way the chicks were packaged was impressive & if I ever have to order chicks again I will be returning to this family.

  24. Helen Stephens

I purchased 5 at the beginning of February. My birds arrived healthy and active. We got them for egg laying. They are wonderful birds with awesome personalities. They don’t mind being held and they love treats. Mine in general are pretty docile. Me and my family have really enjoyed having them.

  25. Alyssa Miller

  26. mariecoolcats

I recently bought a feathery bunch of 13, including 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks (we actually got two extra chicks of the most expensive breeds. Great deal! . They are very happy, healthy hens (only one rooster out of 15), and the barred rocks are the friendliest chickens we have. However, one of the barred rocks has wry tail, which is a genetic condition. She is still our favorite and loves to go broody on a regular basis.
