The Delaware chicken was developed in 1940 by a man named George Ellis. He used a Barred Rock male with a New Hampshire female. This created a beautiful chicken that is mostly white, but their tail and neck feathers are striped with black bars. Delaware was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1952.

George Ellis originally developed this breed for meat. They were the leading chicken for broilers until the late 50’s when the Cornish became popular. Another advantage to Delaware is that they are ample producers (180-260 per year) of well-developed eggs. These traits make Delaware a great dual-purpose chicken to raise for the local farmer or backyard chicken owner who wants both meat and eggs.

Delaware is a fast-growing, fast feathering bird that loves to forage. This bird is also cold hardy. Delaware is known for its calm and friendly temperaments. Unfortunately, they are recognized as threatened by The Livestock Conservancy. Place your order for these 1-day old baby chicks today to reserve an outstanding chicken to have in your backyard!

    Big beautiful biddies
Last year we decided to add to our small flock of biddies. I was wanting a real dual purpose bird and I’ve found it! I couldn’t be more pleased, they are very reliable layers, big, friendly, hardy, and attractive. I was so nervous from reading negative reviews about aggression but so far I have one that is a little bossy and the rest are friendly biddies. I also wanted to thank you so much for the rapid response to my questions. Your agents are so nice.

I ordered two at the beginning of February for them to be delivered at the beginning of March. They sent me 3 instead of two which was a nice surprise. They arrived healthy and spunky. They are friendly and will come running for treats. They aren’t too fond of being held but they tolerate me. They are pretty gentle. One of them is the queen chick of the yard. I still can’t tell them apart. They are white and black . I don’t know how people every tell their chickens apart. I might be able to once they grow a little more. My family and I have really enjoyed them. They have been fun to watch them grow and develop their own personalities. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase them again. They really are beautiful birds.
